The Impasto Landscape series has a strict “no-brush” policy. Only palette knives are allowed to this nature party!
Impasto is a process of layering thick, pigmented oil paint onto a support, in this case, wood panels. All of the pigments are mixed with careful attention to hue and their complimenting values. Each color that’s whipped up on Ashley's palette has a range of both dark and light tones. This is achieved by either adding a tint (white) or a shade (black, or a complimentary color). The result is delicious, raised texture, which is so important as we live in a world which is rapidly losing opportunities for tactility. If art could speak, these would say "Touch Me!"
You'll also find an example of this style of painting on the Palisades piece under the Hip 2B Square collection.
